Norwegian literary great Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, who would win the Nobel prize for literature in 1903, wrote the lyrics to 'Ja Vi Elsker' between 1859 and 1868. His cousin Rikard Nordraak composed the melody in 1864. It was first performed publicly as Norway's National Anthem on Syttende Mai, May 17, 1864 during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the constitution.
