Just inherited my Great, Great Grandmother Lena Opheim Ronning's bible. Just starting to research family history. First question is... she states that her parents were married in 1875, imigrated to America in 1887. Doesn't say where in Norway, but in the bible there is a newspaper clipping of her older sisters obituary. It states that Ragnhild Ophiem was born 1880 in Sjodalen. From what I understand, this is a valley, how can I get more information, church records, land, ect?

When she married by great-grandfather, Harald C. Jorenby, she used the surname Helgesdatter in 1859 at Perry Lutheran Church. I believe she was born in Aadalen.

My great-grandfather Haaken Haakensen was born in Lomen Parish about 1847-1849 and he came to America, settling in Fillmore County Minnesota, where he married my great-grandmother Christina Knudsen. I know that his father's name was also Haaken Haakensen. I am seeking any information that might be available regarding other members of my family in Norway.

My great grandparents were Andris and Marit Kjersten (Kjerstein) who immigrated to Minnesota from Vang in 1869. I just discovered a Margrit Transdatter Kjersten (age 32)and her son Andreas (age 8) from Vang who were aboard the ship Nord Stjernen, that departed Bergen April 25 and arrived in Quebec May 28, 1872. Is this is a branch of the Kjersten family, are there relatives in Canada or the states?

My singing partner Maren and I are researching Huldre lok, stille and eventyr. We find stories and we find tunes but we are not finding tunes and stories together. If anyone can be of assistance we are particularly interested in: Kari o Mari statt op na
since those are our names! We have written an original tune but are truly interested in what was originally played with the story as well as some translation we are struggling with.

She was known as Kersti Syversdatter in North Aurdal in 1866 when she was born to Syver and Liv Helgesen. She left the Hallingdal at a tender age to emigrate to America with an older brother, Helge (or Harold) and settle in Mitchell county, Iowa. She took the name "Carrie Severson" and married August Hultman and raised 11 kids on a farm south of Little Cedar in Burr Oak township. My gramma Viola was #10. I'd be much obliged for any info on parish names in the North Aurdal area. She grew up on a farm so I know she has a birth, baptism and maybe confirmation record somewhere.

Apologies for not having the Aal and Rotto connection on my previous posting see below, same date!). I'm doing some pastoral history work, among other things, and wanted to get information on Rotto clergy.

Again, thanks for your website.

Your site is a wonderful new tool.

I've already emailed an earlier guest signer (Paton) re Hippe family. Don't let the French name of Xavier fool you...that's a French godfather name for my 100% Sami (Lapp) great grandfather who came in 1870's. In Norway, Marit Hippe married Iver Kamrud (went to Alexandria, Glenwood, Starbuck area of Minnesota), their daughter, Bina, married my grandfather, Rev. Karl Xavier in 1906. We are also related to anyone named Aasen, Hoimyr (or variations, Schiotz, and Selid.

Any information appreciated, and I'll help too, as I've done quite a bit of foundation work.

John Xavier

Was so thrilled to see your message! We are Sami, and enjoy visits from relatives every 5 or so years. We lived in Poulsbo, Washington where some family still resides, but I now live in Kent, Washington. My grandfather's name was Mathias Tornensis, and my grandmother was Inga Pentha Tornensis. My father was Paul, uncles; Nels, Carl & Henry, Aunt Mary, brother Paul Edward, mother Patricia and daughter, Riesa. Hope to hear from you and exchange details.

Dear Ms. Hayes,
We are surely related if your Hippe family came from North Aurdal in Valdres. I suspect cousins of that generation to be the case, as many of the Hippe used Marit for women's names. The Marit who was my great-grandmother was Marit Hippe, born June 25, 1845, who married Iver O. Kamrud. They immigrated to the US in 1868. Her parents were Iver Iverson Hippe and Marit Engebretsd Fodnes. Their son, and sister of Marit, Iver Hippe, was born in 1847. This was all in North Aurdal.

Marit and Iver Kamrud ultimately went to Pope County in Minnesota (Glenwood, Starbuck, Alexandria area), and were parents of my grandmother, Bina, born 1878, who married my grandfather Rev. Karl Xavier in 1906.

However, we may also have an in-law connection, as my aunt, Borghild Xavier Selid married Rev. Alvin Selid in 1943 or 1944. The Selids in Norway spelled their name Saelid, so there is probably a cousin by marriage connection. I don't pursue that Selid side, but email me back if you want a family email contact or two. West coast family people have even connected with Saelids in Norway in personal visit.

Thanks for emailing.

John Xavier

I enjoyed this site. I am a decendant
of Knut Jorandbyehaugen. Later changed to Knut Haugen. He came from Hedalen in 1853 I believe. His father, Syver Jorandbyehaugen, joined him later.
Syver was a bellringer the stave church in Hedalen. I'd love to visit there someday!
