Beginning in 2013, the Valdres Samband will sponsor two $250 scholarships for Norwegian language camp. The scholarships are offered to provide an opportunity for members, or children and grandchildren of members, to learn more about their Norwegian heritage and language. Two applicants will be selected to receive a $250 scholarship towards the language camp of their choice with an emphasis in Norwegian heritage.
Some of the camps that qualify for this scholarship (others will be considered) include
Sons of Norway District 5 Heritage Camp - Masse Moro
Norwegian language and heritage camp located on the Beaver Creek Nature Reserve in Fall Creek, Wisconsin.
Concordia Language Villages
Concordia Language Villages has been in operation since 1963. In 1971 they created an architecturally authentic village called Skogfjorden on Turtle River Lake near Bemidji, Minnesota. For more information please visit their website at
Norwegian Ridge Language Camp

Members, children or grandchildren of members in good standing of the Valdres Samband
Complete and return the application form by February 1, 2013.
Include a copy of latest report card/transcript and any certificates you would like considered.
Do not send originals.
Write an essay of 500 words or less describing your interest in your Norwegian heritage
Topic suggestions (or choose your own):
Explain why you wish to learn more about your Norwegian heritage.
How do you plan to share this knowledge with a broader audience?
What part of Valdres are your ancestors from and what is your favorite fact about it?
Tell an interesting story you've heard about your Valdres ancestor.
Include a wallet-sized photo that can be published with your winning essay in the Budstikken
The Valdres Samband Board of Directors will evaluate all applications at the February board meeting. Winners will be notified during the first week in March 2013. Factors to be considered include

Desire to learn more about his/her Norwegian Heritage
The Valdres Samband Board reserves the right not to select any applicant if all applications are inadequate or unsuitable. All decisions by the Valdres Samband Board are final. Winning essays and photos of scholarship recipients will be published in the Valdres Samband newsletter, the Budstikken.
SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS must attend the Willmar Stevne Banquet on Saturday, June 22, 2013, to receive their checks. Recipients will be asked to read their essays at the banquet. If the recipient is not present, the scholarship will be forfeited.
